An AR installation in the Festival of the Mind’s Futurecade showcasing a new 3D digital model of Sheffield Castle in the context of contemporary Castlegate, alongside visions for the future.
September 2018 / Millennium Galleries, Sheffield / in partnership with UoS Departments of Archaeology and Computer Science, Human Studio and Friends of Sheffield Castle
This project showcased the outputs of the Experience Castlegate research project as part of the Festival of the Mind Futurecade exhibition and attracted thousands of visitors over 10 days.
Visitors first saw a physical model of the present-day Castle site and then, when the model was viewed through an iPad, the Castle sprang into view, overlaid upon the contemporary site. Alongside the model was a film showing the digital model of the Castle, excerpts from recent archaeological research and future visions of the site designed by architecture students.
Experience Castlegate received £75k of funding from the AHRC/EPSRC Immersive Experience programme. The project explored the capacity of immersive technologies to inform heritage and community-led urban regeneration strategies.
